November 6, 2020 - December 19, 2020
Freecalling@sweeneyshoal Is a multidisciplinary exhibition that includes video, sculpture, and a microsite created by artist Kanad Chakrabati in response to contemporary political unrest, climate change, nuclear colonialism, and COVID-19. For this exhibition, the artist took inspiration from a variety of historically and culturally significant events and texts ranging from Enoch Powell’s infamous 1968 speech, ‘Rivers of Blood,’ to recently declassified materials documenting nuclear testing at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The layered and filtered nature of Chakrabarti’s video work was designed to parallel overlaps in history and reflect the interconnected nature of tangled data networks, colonialism, capital, trade, and imperialism. Investigating the digitalization of our world through the use of non-human intelligence software, Chakrabati alludess to a post-human existence as well as considered the constraints of the pandemic, institutional and exhibition-related, on the practice of art-making itself.
